INNER CHILD WORK

Suppose in your family of origin; there was alcohol or drug abuse, violence, neglect, hostile divorce or other types of dysfunction. In that case, you likely had some childhood trauma that is negatively impacting your life today. A family where conflict, neglect and misbehaviour are constant and everlasting is dysfunctional.

We do not get to choose the family we are born into or raised in, and no family is perfect.

Here are some traits of a dysfunctional family:

  • Lack of communication
  • Lack of Empathy
  • Mental Health issues
  • Controlling behaviours
  • Perfectionism
  • Criticism
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Violence
  • Emotional, Physical or Sexual abuse
  • Over religious belief system
  • Aggressively authoritative and tyrannical parents or caregivers

If you grew up in a dysfunctional family, your life as an adult is likely to be negatively impacted. Growing up in a dysfunctional family environment will likely have adverse effects on adult life today.

Here are some effects of growing up in a dysfunctional home:

  • You have numbed out your feelings
  • You continuously have guilty feelings
  • You find it hard to ask for what you need
  • Shame
  • An overdeveloped sense of responsibility
  • You are very hard on yourself
  • You feel isolated and empty
  • You feel hopeless
  • You have high levels of anxiety

You might find yourself thinking things like:

  • I’m not good enough
  • I´ll never get what I want from life
  • Why does this always happen to me
  • Why do I keep attracting this type of partner
  • I can´t leave this relationship
  • I’m responsible for his/her happiness
  • I’ll never get my need met
  • I wish I could stand up for myself
  • Why can’t I have meaningful relationships

You may also notice things like:

  • Frequently expecting things to go wrong
  • Pessimism
  • Feeling afraid or nervous to speak up about things that are important to you
  • Always wanting outside approval
  • Body tension and often feeling agitated or unsettled
  • Being more isolated
  • Increased criticism of yourself
  • Increased anger at yourself or others
